3-step process for creating a well-rounded wardrobe
Creating a wardrobe that reflects your personal style, works for your lifestyle, and is filled with pieces that you actually love and want to wear can be a tall order!
It can be difficult or confusing to even know where or how to start and throughout my style journey I’ve definitely had my fair share of confusion and lessons I had to learn the hard way.
Using the lessons I’ve learned over the past decade, I’ve created a simple 3-step process that is straightforward, easy to understand, and works for anyone, regardless of whether you’re starting your wardrobe from scratch, or you simply want to fine tune what you already have.
This process has helped me create a practical, functional, versatile wardrobe that works for every part of my life, not just the Instagram-worthy moments!
So, without further ado, here is a brief overview of
1) The Details, 2) The Declutter, and 3) The Do’s and Don’ts
(1) THE DETAILS
The first and most important step of the wardrobe creation process is learning The Details.
They supply the background information that is going to give you the knowledge and confidence you need as you sort through your existing wardrobe deciding which pieces to keep, shop for new pieces that will positively contribute to your wardrobe, and refine your wardrobe so that it reflects and works for your style preferences, your personality, and your lifestyle.
The Details include:
familiarizing yourself with the different types of fabric used in the construction of clothing;
learning how to use garment measurements instead of solely relying on a size tag to determine fit;
learning how to determine whether an item is high-quality and the benefit of tailoring and alterations;
learning the different wardrobe categories and how each category plays an important role in your wardrobe; and
learning how to determine your style and fit preferences as well as experimenting with different styling tweaks and techniques to help you increase the versatility of your wardrobe.
(2) THE DECLUTTER
The Declutter is the second part of the process and involves more than randomly discarding a bunch of items from your wardrobe simply for the sake of clearing up space.
This part of the process is about using all of the information you learned from The Details and then applying that information to your existing wardrobe. It involves critically thinking about which pieces you really want to keep, which pieces make the most sense to keep, and which ones you just need to let go of.
After you’ve figured out what needs to stay and what needs to go, you can take an inventory of what’s left in your wardrobe to help you pinpoint what you may be missing so that you won’t waste time (or money!) purchasing unnecessary items or repurchasing items that you already have. You can find my wardrobe declutter flowchart as well as other wardrobe building tools here.
(3) THE DO’S and DON’TS
The third and last part of the process is shopping do’s and don’ts.
Keep in mind, these are not hard and fast rules and may not necessarily apply to everyone, but they are really helpful guidelines for anyone who may have a problem with impulse purchases, or anyone with a limited budget, or anyone who has buyer’s remorse after making a “final sale” purchase that they’re now stuck with.
The do’s and don’ts help keep you on track financially and also help ensure that your wardrobe is filled with pieces that you actually want to wear, that you wear often, and that make sense for your lifestyle.
If you want to learn more or you’re ready to start creating your own version of a practical, functional, versatile wardrobe, check out my digital audio course, Creating A Well-Rounded Wardrobe, which guides you through the creation process and gives you the confidence you need to create your own version of a well-rounded wardrobe.
And remember, this is not about trying to create the “perfect” wardrobe all at once. Your lifestyle and personal preferences will likely change over time and as you evolve so should your wardrobe! The beauty of this process is that you can come back to it over and over again, using the lessons you’ve already learned and applying them to your wardrobe as it evolves with you.
So, take your time, have fun, and enjoy the process of creating your own well-rounded wardrobe!
